Dr. Greg’s Favourite Misconceptions about Naturopathic Medicine

1. Naturopathic Doctors and Homeopathic Doctors are the same

– Naturopathic Medicine uses homeopathy as a modality of treatment, but we also do much more. Our scope of practice and treatment go far beyond homeopathy. The main treatments I like to prescribe to patients are: acupuncture, clinical nutrition, lifestyle counselling, supplements, hydrotherapy (using water to heal) and botanical medicine (using the medicinal properties of plants to heal). By using more than one modality we can look and treat a person from more than one angle. This gives the patient more options for treatment and not limiting them to one single modality, such as Homeopathic Medicine.

2. We tell you to take 100’s of pills a day

– Supplements can be helpful, but sleep and food are better. There have been the rare cases where large amounts of supplements are required to support the body, but this is often not the case. We are here to help find the obstacles to cure and create an environment in the body and mind that is conducive to healing. Often this is done by adjusting lifestyle habits to decrease the major causes of stress on the body. Inside every one of us is the power to heal. The art of Naturopathic Medicine is discovering how to unlock that healing potential in each individual we treat.

3. We get our patients to dance naked under the moon light

– I have also been asked if I sing into bowls or ask patients to bathe in manure. Although it might be entertaining, it isn’t evidence based. Naturopathic Docotors have gone through 4 years of vigorous training in western medical sciences and clinical diagnosis. We use scientific and traditional means to develop a patient centered approach to human physiology and implement the least invasive therapies possible. But generally we use the bowl for salads, baths for cleanliness & hydrotherapy, and dancing we usually leave to the discretion of the patient.
